Baghdad Landfill

We see here a sobering image of an Iraqi family scavenging for building material to construct a new home. Their new home, like that of their neighbors, is located in a landfill. Photographer Russell Klika snapped this poignant image through a four inch thick bullet proof glass window from a vehicle weaving in and out of traffic at 50 plus miles per hour. Ironically, while there was a great deal of separation from him and his subject, the image so profoundly affected him that it compelled him to return to the country to once again photograph its people. 1.7 million people of Iraq have been internally displaced by the violence.
