"Eye of the Storm: War through the Lens of American Combat Photographers" is a fine art charitable exhibition conceived and curated by Los Angeles area curator Dane Jensen.
"Tens of thousands of men and women are returning from the war with serious physical and mental debilitations...I [realized] I could utilize my experience as a curator to pool the best talents and resources to orchestrate an exhibition that raises awareness, funding and support for those in need" (Jensen 2007).
"Eye of the Storm" is comprised of limited edition prints that show the multi-faceted nature of the recent wars in Iraq and Afghanistan from nine of the most decorated professional military photographers in the United States. "Eye of the Storm" photographers include Army Staff Sgt. Russell Klika, Air Force Staff Sgt. Stacy Pearsall, Air Force Master Sgt. Andy Dunaway, Air Force Staff Sgt. Jacob Bailey, Air Force Staff Sgt. Cherie Thurlby, Air Force Tech Sgt. Jeremy Lock, Army Staff Sgt. Michael Pryor, Marine Corporal Samuel Corum, and Navy Petty Officer First Class Michael Watkins.
Jensen and Exhibition Direction Micki Meng contacted each photographer personally and obtained detailed accounts of the images and were able to put together a powerful exhibition with the help of sponsors and volunteers who believed in the integrity of the show.
"The photographs selected for this exhibition are aesthetically dynamic, as well as psychologically provocative, reflecting the multifaceted nature of war. The images provide a look at what servicemen and women are seeing everyday a glimpse into a reality that is usually closed off to the American public" (Jensen 2007).
Recent winner of the high-esteemed Military Photographer of the Year award for 2007, Staff Sgt. Stacy Pearsall proclaims her support for the exhibition:
"I have ate, slept and fought with some of America's finest young men and women while serving in Iraq. It is important for me to show their story and I feel [this exhibition] allows me to do so. Given that I am in the military, I have the opportunity and ability to show a more intimate view of the every-day soldier" (Pearsall 2007).
The exhibition debuted in Los Angeles on May 24, 2008.
